The Benefits of Reiki

There are many legends surrounding the origins of Reiki (pronounced "ray-key") and even its rediscovery in the late 19th century by Dr Mikao Usui from Japan.

Meaning "universal life force energy", this ancient form of hands-on healing is said to have started life in either Tibet, India, Egypt or possibly Atlantis or the Continent of Mu. It is said that both Buddha and Christ channeled this energy in their healings.

Despite widespread use dating back more than 5000 years, Reiki has been kept secret for much of the time since then. Only until it arrived in the United States from Japan in the 1930s did Reiki undergo an explosion in popularity.

Different Forms of Reiki

Today, there are more than one million Reiki practitioners worldwide, and more than a dozen major branches in use, each with their own individual benefits.

Michael Meanwell has been practicing Reiki for a number of years and is a Reiki Master/Teacher in several Reiki modalities including:

• Usui System of Reiki (the traditional and most popular form of Reiki)
• Raku Kei Reiki (known as 'The Way of the Fire Dragon', it claims to be the same system Usui disciple Takarta taught, and produces a heightened consciousness)
• Tera-Mai Reiki (created by Kathleen Ann Milner, this system adds non-traditional and Tibetan symbols to the original Usui method, claiming a more complete and earthy healing)
• Seichim Reiki (developed by Patrick Ziegler, this system is reputed to have its origins in Egypt. It works well on the complexities of acute and chronic diseases as well as anxiety, fatigue, depression, frustration and other symptoms produced by stress)
• Tibetan Reiki (helps to bring energies into harmony and balance)

How Reiki Works

Whichever Reiki modality you subscribe to, practitioners are channels for this unique energy.

The ability to channel Reiki is gained by receiving attunements during special initiation ceremonies as part of First or Second Degree Reiki workshops (see below). During Second Degree and more advanced Reiki workshops, unique Reiki symbols enabling the energy to work in different ways are passed down from Reiki Master to Student in secrecy, and are not to be revealed to the public.

Once you have been attuned to Reiki, you have the ability to transfer this energy at will for your entire life.

Using a series of symbols in accordance with hand positions on the client, Reiki has been responsible for transforming people's lives at all levels - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually in areas as diverse as:

• stress and pain relief
• balances and harmonies body's energies
• strengthens immune system
• relief from allergies, arthritis and chronic disorders
• complements other treatments and conventional medicines
• improves intuition
• promotes personal awareness
• clears toxins
• enhance meditative states
• promotes relaxation and sleep
• clears blockages and suppressed emotions
• balancing chakras
• first aid
• improving/resolving personal relationships
• heals causes
• it is an intelligent energy which goes to the greatest need
• dramatically reduces recovery process (from surgery and major illness)

Reiki harmonizes and balances the body's energies, including chakras.

There are countless holistic benefits to working with Reiki, but it's important to consult a doctor in the case of illness. Reiki can be used as an additional form of treatment, as it complements all forms of medicine and healing.

Dr Usui's Spiritual Precepts of Reiki:

1. Just for today, do not worry

2. Just for today, do not anger

3. Honor your parents, teachers and elders

4. Earn your living honestly

5. Show gratitude to every living thing

Reiki - not a cult

Reiki is many things to many people, but there are many things it is not.

Reiki is definitely not a religion or cult. Reiki does not require any great skill - anyone can learn to use it in a relatively short period of time (in just a matter of hours, you can be channeling Reiki energy, and you can spend a lifetime developing your skills - the choice is yours).

Reiki is also not a massage technique; it is a natural system of of hands-on healing. And, finally, Reiki is not dependent on faith by either the practitioner or the client (it works well with plants and animals which have no concept of this healing system).

If you were to sum up the effects and the intention of Reiki, you could call it simply "unconditional love" - the highest energy on the planet.
